Olimpíadas verdes?

A China está lutando para que estas Olimpíadas sejam conhecidas como as Olimpíadas Verdes, o que, convenhamos, não será uma tarefa nada fácil. Em março, nós comentamos sobre como a poluição de Pequim poderia afetar os pulmões dos atletas. O fundista Haile Gebrselassie, da Etiópia, desistiu de disputar a prova de 42 km justamente por causa desse problema.

O governo chinês, então, resolveu entrar em ação. Para conter a poluição em Pequim, a 20 dias de serem abertas as Olimpíadas, instituiu um rodízio de veículos radical: 50% da frota diária não poderá circular pelas ruas e avenidas da cidade. Com a divisão entre as placas pares e ímpares, a idéia é que os 3,3 milhões de carros da capital Chinesa dêem uma folga ao clima.

Os motoristas não são obrigados a deixar seus carros em casa. O rodízio funciona na base da troca: quem respeitar o pedido, não precisará pagar três meses de impostos e algumas taxas. Agora, quem for pego em um dia sequer trafegando pela cidade, terá que pagar tudo normalmente. O governo municipal, com a medida, deixará de arrecadar cerca de R$ 350 milhões.

E essa não é a única ação para melhorar os ares asiáticos. Três mil obras, de shoppings a arranha-céus, foram paralisadas para reduzir a poluição. Os operários que ficaram desempregados temporariamente tiveram que voltar para as suas províncias de origem, por não terem permissão para morar na capital.

O governo ainda puniu quatro cidades e dez empresas de eletricidade por desrespeitarem metas ambientais. Yingtan, Sanya, Hechi e Yuxi tiveram o certificado ambiental suspenso para a construção de novos projetos. As cidades atrasaram a construção de usinas de tratamento de esgoto ou apresentaram falhas nas instalações.

Até os fogos de artifício se tornaram eco-eficientes. Segundo o site norte-americano Green Daily, a pirotecnia causará menos poluição do que as tradicionais e usará menos calor para ser estourada (270º C, segundo o jornal britânico Daily Mail).

Embora muitos esforços, não tem como falar que um evento que reúne pessoas de diversos continentes – e, conseqüentemente, obrigando os atletas a viajarem de avião -, queima uma tocha usando gás e obriga as cidades a construções rápidas e pesadas seja completamente sustentável.

Certamente, não será dessa vez que teremos olimpíadas verdes.
